The basketball player walks onto the court and joins their teammates. The player then leads the team through warm-up exercises before grabbing some basketballs for layup lines. The simple addition of exercises to the warm-up routine, however, is not always this easy.

A warm-up is an often overlooked part of preparing for sport or exercise. While there are many ways to warm-up, a warm-up meant to engage the neuromuscular system is best. This kind of warm-up is effective because it simulates the movements an athlete performs in a game. As such, researchers recently reviewed the best ways to adopt this warm-up. Their research found that teaching coaches about the warm-up and providing them resources, with or without personnel support, can prevent injury among players and keep them playing their sport.
